Watamu Marine Excursions was formed in 2014. Currently, the community group has 60 members with 15 shared boats. We take visitors on boat excursions generating income for the local community through eco-tourism activities.

Ventures to the nearby coral gardens for snorkelling, swimming and relaxing are popular among visitors to the Watamu area. For people who can’t swim, our glass bottom-boats are the perfect opportunity to experience the marine life of the coral reef.

In addition to countless other fish and sea life, you may see whales, whale sharks, dolphins, manta rays and endangered sea turtles. October to March are the best time to observe the fascinating behaviour of dolphins; humpback whales are best seen August through September.

Sailing trips with traditional boats, or dhows, are also available. We are aware and sensitive to conservation issues and take care to mitigate human-caused damage near the captivating coral gardens or between the channels of Mida Creek. While cruising the waters, ask to stop for a picnic or lunch at Mida Creek, which is known for the abundance of wildlife and birds.

We are committed to conserving the environment and protection of marine wildlife. We are committed to responsible client care. All our members carry a WME identity card that visitors can request to be displayed.

Disappointment after disappointment

We booked a trip with Captain Fazal as part of a small group of four. When he came to pick us up he explained that the other two passengers weren’t coming but that we could still go out. After taking us to the marina and taking our money, he put us on a crowded boat and left. We sat for an hour as we loaded on more passengers. At our only snorkel stop (45 minutes of the full day trip) the boat sailed away from the site without us until a passenger saw our flailing arms and notified the crew. What kind of operator leaves without checking that all guests are aboard? On the creek tour the crew walked on the coral to pick starfish out of the water and passed them around the boat (not allowed). At the end of the tour we were loaded onto tuk tuk to be driven back to the resort instead of being dropped off at the beach as Captain Fazal stated at the beginning of the tour. At least we didn’t have to pay for the inconvenience.
